EmdoorVR and Ultraleap unveil a new MR headset reference design
Chinese company EmdoorVR and Ultraleap have teamed up to develop a reference design for mixed reality headsets that integrates Ultraleap's hand tracking. This eliminates the need for additional sensors beyond traditional tracking cameras for SLAM and controller detection, allowing OEMs to reduce manufacturing costs.
Ultraleap has been working on hand tracking technology for over a decade and is a leading provider of out-of-the-box hand tracking solutions for headset manufacturers.
EmdoorVR is a Shenzhen-based VR headset maker that made headlines with its Apple Vision Pro knockoff. The startup was founded in 2015.
Stanford VR study brings seniors ‘back to life’ with memories and virtual experiences
Stanford VR study brings seniors ¨back to life¨ with memories and virtual experiences. John Knox Village was one of 17 senior communities around the country that participated in a recently published Stanford University study that found that large majorities of 245 participants between 65 and 103 years old enjoyed virtual reality, improving both their emotions and their interactions with staff.
The study is part of a larger effort to adapt VR so it can be beneficial to seniors’ health and emotional well-being and help lessen the impact dementia has on some of them. During the testing, seniors picked from seven-minute virtual experiences such as parachuting, riding in a tank, watching stage performances, playing with puppies and kittens or visiting places like Paris or Egypt. The participants wore headsets that gave them 360-degree views and sounds, making it seem like they had been all but dropped into the actual experience.

He attended University of Kansas School of Education and received a Ph.D from Dept. of Educational Psychology and Research, M.Sc. in Education, and a B.A. in Psychology. Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Costa Rican Board of Psychologists. VRD is pleased to have this prominent medical professional leading our team in Latin America.
- What is immersive technology in healthcare?
It is a very important part of Digital Therapeutics that uses immersive technology to provoke changes in the patient lifestyles as it increases treatment attachment and support clinical treatment of several health conditions.
- How is immersive technology in health care being used in Costa Rica?
In Costa Rica, immersive technology is being used in the assessment of attention and hyperactivity disorders of children and adolescents, in the assessment and training of cognitive skills in children and seniors and as cognitive stimulation tasks in patients with conditions such as Parkinson´s Disease, Alzheimer´s Disease, stroke and traumas. It is also being used as a stress reduction and stress management tool, with teachers and in surgical settings pre- and post- surgical procedures. Soon, immersive technology will be available to a variety of health professionals in Costa Rica working with patients in need of physical therapy treatment and with rehab of patients of several ages, including pediatrics and seniors as well as in occupational therapy and cardio rehab.
- How do you think the market of immersive technology is going to behave in the coming years?
Definitively there is a tendency in the market to rely on technology-assisted assessments and interventions. In Costa Rica we are witnessing a growing interest in the education and health market for the use of VR and AR. More and more clinics are working with VRD HealthTech as technology that supplements their diagnostic and intervention procedures.Schools not only use VR as part of the technology-assisted teaching and learning but also, they use VR to enhance cognitive development and to make curriculum decisions regarding admission and placement of students in the schools and to make referrals to health care professionals.

VRD HealthTech Latin America goals in Costa Rica is to make available to health care professionals the most innovative, objective, time-effective and ecologically valid technology in the assessment and intervention of several health conditions, applicable to a wide range of ages and health conditions.
